Why become a member of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment?

25 Jul

The Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI) is the predominant professional body for securities, financial planning, and wealth and investment professionals, operating since 1992. With more than 40,000 members across 116 countries, it’s an incredibly popular organisation that encourages professional excellence and integrity. What’s more, it’s just launched an Essex branch, giving IFDS team members even more of a reason to join.

At the time of the launch of the new branch, the CISI already had more than 1,000 members, students and apprentices, and with a significant portion of IFDS staff working and living in the Essex area, it’s the perfect opportunity to boost membership and encourage industry professionals to get involved. Debbie Ives, IFDS Director of Investor Services, spoke to us about what it means for IFDS team members.

Networking opportunities
The CISI hosts a number of events throughout the year, ranging from conferences to seminars and networking events. The latter is a key component of CISI membership, as the body exposes you to a huge number of people in the industry who you may not otherwise have the opportunity to meet.

According to a Virgin infographic, traditional networking is the most effective method of finding new staff. It’s also fantastic for peer learning, as you’ll undoubtedly hear and learn from people from different parts of the industry and with alternative viewpoints.

The new Essex location means members no longer have to travel into London, and is a great incentive to attend local, relevant events with like minded people. At IFDS, a huge number of our Essex-based staff live and work in the area, so we see real value in having a branch here to help support personal and career development; and to develop our contacts with schools, colleges and universities.

Ongoing development
One of the best things about CISI membership is that its events are always relevant to the financial services industry. Members can listen to and learn from featured speakers who share insights and updates on topical news, which is brilliant for ongoing professional development. As the industry is constantly shifting and evolving with new technologies and policies, ongoing development is vital for both financial services and IFDS, so we encourage our team members to actively seek this out where possible. The Essex branch is currently putting together its CPD (continuing professional development) programme so there’s plenty to get excited about.

You don’t have to be a long-serving financial services professional to join the CISI. While membership helps you to maintain competence, we encourage members at every stage of their career and think it’s particularly beneficial for people who are new to financial services to come and learn from some of the best in the business.

The CISI has qualifications that can establish your initial competence and help test and expand your skills. Those relating to CASS, Platforms, Pension Administration, Cyber Security and I.T. are just a few that will be of particular interest. These are all key to the growth of our business and not to mention the current regulatory focus .

Our first event
The Essex branch had its first event on 14 June, kicking off in style with an EU referendum discussion. Speakers covered both sides of the argument and there was a clear focus on how it could impact financial services and the economy, ensuring the debate was relevant to the CISI audience. The turnout was excellent and we anticipate our CPD programme will attract similar numbers.

The CISI has local branches across the UK, including Scotland, and increasingly across the world. It is a well-known industry body and has the respect of governments and firms around the world. It has a high standing in financial services and IFDS is proud to be part of such a brilliant organisation. Come and join us! Find out more here.
